There is no field of dreams in private practice -- the if you build it, they will come notion needs lots and lots of aftercare.  Here's why: The concept of mere exposure.

Big corporate advertisers figured out more than 50 years ago (with the help of marketing psychologists)  that it takes people repeated exposure to a consistent stimulus to form a preference for that stimulus.  Then, it takes more exposure  -- languaged in the right way -- for them to want to buy (hire, in our case).

And that’s assuming they are “in the market” for what you are selling (offering, in our case).

The more the consumer is bombarded with choices (as in marketing from your competition), the more exposure they need to your message. This is why marketers talk about brand identity -- you have to not only stand out among the competition, but you have to be memorable.

That’s why all ads of any sort these days – from online profiles in locator directories to a print ad (if you still get seduced into doing those worthless things) – MUST have your website url in them.  And that of course means that you have to have a sticky, website that will keep visitors interested and entice them to return.

This is also why taglines are important. Taglines fit nicely in small spaces.  Done well, they are catchy or compelling in some way.  They not only make you more memorable, they strengthen your professional identity. When you get your tagline perfected, use it on everything.

So if your ad isn’t working, it can be because:

  • The right people haven’t see it enough times
  • The right people aren’t ready to seek your services now
  • It isn’t noticed by the right people = wrong placement venue
  • It isn’t connecting with the right people = too general, badly designed or phrased
  • It isn’t sending traffic to your website = no url in the ad
  • You don’t have your own domain name = diminishes professional credibility
  • You don’t have a website to further engage the potential client

Be
Productively
Impatient

Let’s pretend you’ve got all your marketing pieces in place, and you’re waiting for all those hundreds of ideal clients to call for appointments.  And waiting.

And waiting.

What now?

1.  Re-evaluate your plan, refine your tagline, try something new, try another niche, develop an autoresponder series, spruce up your website.

In other words, keep tinkering with your marketing strategies, and continue testing how well they work until they are humming along perfectly as a consistent manner to keep your appointment calendar booked solid.

And then??

2.  Streamline your office administration systems, including bookkeeping, patient files, and payment systems such as taking credit cards.

Get as much as automated as you can in order to have less hassle when you get fully booked. You might even consider hiring a Virtual Assistant and delegating out some of the chores that sap your time, energy and enthusiasm for marketing.

3.  Work on your energy, self-confidence, willingness, and other subtle, intangible factors that draw people to you.

There are lots of self-help materials available in books and on the internet designed for ongoing personal and professional growth.  Or, a small business coach may be what you need to help you sustain motivation and follow through on your marketing, and other aspects of being a client attraction magnet.

4.  Trust the Universe to provide you with opportunities to do your work.  Part of trust is letting go of trying to control when things happen.  I find that having creative hobbies that are also part of my spiritual practice helps me do this.  Others use outdoors or physical activities to regain mental clarity and emotional balance. Find what works for you and turn your worry over to the Universe.
