About Deah
The Smart Beginner's Marketing Start Kit

A lot of marketing gurus will tell you that filling a private practice depends on getting referrals, joining networking groups, having a high powered e-commerce website, writing articles, making presentations, etc.  The list of must do's is long, daunting, and for many of us just reading it is a demotivating energy drain.

My recommendation is to play to your strengths, whatever those are.

Strength 1

Are you an outgoing person who loves parties and business gatherings?

Is social networking a highlight of your day?  Is your energy high early in the morning? Can you jump out of bed all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to shine with strangers?

Is early morning the best time of day to string compelling marketing sentences together?  Can you make easy conversation with anyone about anything in any group?

If yes to the above, you may have a natural gift for using networking groups to your advantage in attracting more clients to your practice.  If no, keep reading.

Strength 2

Does your mind naturally find connections between what you offer and how it complements the services of allied health providers?  Do you naturally think in terms of building mutually beneficial strategic alliances?

Are your ideal clients also the ideal clients of a specific type of non-competing business?  Do you have a good understanding of how your services will benefit the clients, patients, or customers of other businesses? Can you talk in terms of results you can help those clients achieve that reflects well on the other business or helps their goals, too?

If yes, you may have a natural strength in developing professional referral sources.

Strength 3

Are you an innate teacher who enjoys leading a workshop? Do you enjoy facilitating a group discussion? Do you have a good sense of timing, and ability to get your points across succintly, using concrete examples that others can apply, and inviting questions that easily lead you into promoting your services?

Does the logistical work of scheduling signature talks appeal to you?  Might you enjoy finding presentation sites, dealing with facilities managers or group hosts, creating presentation materials such as handouts or PowerPoint slide shows?

If yes, making presentations could be a natural strength and good marketing modality for you.

Strength 4

Do you enjoy producing written products?  Do you have skill with the written word?  Is it easy for you to write short articles for free publications?  Do you already have brief special reports that might be used as give-aways?  Could you serialized a set of topics or instructions for an autoresponder mini-course or ezine?

Do you have newspaper or desktop publishing experience with which you can easily design a website by using a WYSIWYG web editor tool?  Does this kind of activity satisfy a creative urge?

If yes, you may have a natural strength in the areas of marketing that call for copywriting.

Rank Your

Natural Skills

Rank your natural skills from most enjoyable and/or easiest and/or most energy giving, to the least.

Then taking each ranked skill at a time, starting with the one you've rated as the highest, and determine 5 ways and/or places you can use that skill to market your practice.

This is another way to begin your marketing plan.

Remember that you need to connect with your ideal client who has a specific problem and who frequents particular people and places as you determine the ways and places you will use these skills.

What other natural strengths or skillsets do you have that can help you get your marketing message out in the places where your ideal client can be found?

What natural skills can you use that actually increase your personal energy by stimulating your interest in the business of being in business?

What activities do you already know would decrease your personal energy because you dread them, or feel scared, or unconfident when you even think about doing them?

When Emotions
Block Your
Marketing
Momentum

1.  Look that fear square in the eye -- what lie is it whispering in your mind's ear?

2.  Detect and reframe that family of origin message you got about tooting your own horn.

3. Uncover and heal the self-esteem issues that are sabotaging your efforts.

4. Find the true source of your resistance, hesitance, beliefs about "appropriateness" and other self-defeating energy killers.

5.  Realize whose voice it is giving you negative messages about money, success, your work, being deserving, being different and standing out from the crowd, etc.

6.  Examine your fear of success, the changes it would bring to your life, and the resistance you have to those changes.

7. Get some coaching on overcoming emotional blocks to success.
